For myself, I'd start by removing the little Blue-Point specials and putting in some real speakers...more for the highs than for the bass, though bass is nice, too <g>. In my Westy I mounted a tube-type (Radio Shack) powered subwoofer hanging from the bottom of the book-case (where the rear AC would be if I had one). I can remove it by loosening the mounting screws, though I never have. I started with it in the rear bench seat, but a) it was muffled and b) I wanted the space. The present mounting is very visible but doesn't take much useful space.

I bought it, incidentally, in a misguided attempt to make the stock radio louder, as at highway speeds it just didn't have enough volume. Of course that didn't work, it had magnificent bass but still couldn't make out the words. So I got a booster amp which works fine, and I *still* have magnificent bass.

I also just got an '85 7-pass which seems significantly quieter on the road; the stock radio is audible even with the crummy little speakers. Much less roar from the wind. The only difference I can think of is the Westy luggage bin etc -- on the '85 I can even hear the engine, which is completely muffled under the floor cushion in the Westy.
