Joel, I wonder if it is that critical to use Dexron or Dexron II. Dexron III should be compatable with anything the earlier versions were. In fact most Vanagon power steering systems I encounter have power steering fluid in them and not any type of ATF at all. I would feel better with Dexron III in there than power steering fluid any day. In case some of you are wondering wether you have power steering fluid or ATF in your system just open the cap and look inside. ATF is red (this is what it should look like). Power steering fluid is brown (this is when you start to cry). The vans that have been running power steering fluid usually wind up developing problems later on. Just my opinion, and experience.
