Ray, I had the same problem, I undid the four lock nuts that hold the two swivel plates together, and lubricated the runners using wax crayons. If you use grease it'll only get stiffer again as dirt gets mixed in, and it is very messy. Graphite is an alternative, but it is also very messy. When I put the unit back together, I left the nuts a little slack as well. Works perfect now.
