It is a lot to ask of the small drip rail to hold a 20 lb cantilevered weight for miles and miles of bumping along the highway. It's even worse to attach it at only two points. Lots of stress and flex will eventually fatigue and crack the metal, resulting in what you experienced.

You might have a welding shop fabricate a simple bracket that you could screw onto the side of the van (use at least two screws) that could be welded on to the awning. Or, have a body shop repair the drip rail with a good welding job. That would require painting the area and would be fairly expensive.

It is best not to run with your awning on the side of the van all the time because of this weak connection. Just install it when you plan on using it, or beef up the connection system as above if you want to leave it on year 'round.
