Of course, Bubba's other rule is "tighten it till it strips, then back off a quarter turn..." :)

Seriously, I have read that one of the problems with screw type hose clamps is that rubber is subject to "cold creep"; that is, over time the hose sort of oozes out from under the clamp, thus loosening the connection. This is one of the reasons that most OE clamps are the spring type; they keep a constant pressure on the rubber... I would feel more comfortable with new lines than old, no matter what!
