Chibong-
The diesel, as you may know, uses "glow plugs" to help the fuel ignite when
the motor is cold. These plugs are warmed by electric current during the
time the "yellow light" is on. There is one glow plug for each cylinder in
the motor. All of them must work for the motor to start well when it is
cold.
If your van has more than 80,000 km on it, it is possible that one or more
of the glow plugs is worn out. These are fairly easy to replace, and each
plug costs about as much as a good oil filter. Replace all four if you
think this may be the problem.
A simpler problem: the FUSE that allows the current for the glow plugs may
be broken. The fuse is located in a 2.5cm x 2.5cm black plastic box in the
motor compartment.
Two wires will run to the fuse box, one of the wires will run to the top
rear of the motor, where it attaches to the glow plug wiring harness. The
other wire will run toward the battery. Both wires are red with a white
stripe. The fuse (inside the box) is a flat strip of metal, held in by two
small screws. If it is broken, no current is warming the glow plugs. Buy a
new fuse. They are very inexpensive.
Hope this helps...

Hi everybody,
First, many thanks for all your helpful advices.
Now I have to ask you the starting problem.
After amber light on and turn off, it is hard to start the motor under
about 8 degree C.
I have already checked the battery and it is OK.
Please advise how to detect the problem and how to fix it.
There is no any VW dealer or advisor here in Korea.
Best regards,
Chibong Oh
