Steven, probably not a problem to tape of the ducts, but the REAL solution is so easy, you won't need to.

Bring you wife, Son, or significant neighbor, and have them sit in the driver's seat of your Vanagon.

You on the other hand, need to slide up underneath the van, to look for your heater control boxes. They are at the back of the van, on either side of the transmission, just forward of the motor, about halfway up between the bottom of the motor, and the top of the motor.

They are two metal "boxes" about the size of a softball, attached to the duct that comes from the heater box and runs to the front of the Van. There are two "boxes", one on either side of the transmission.

Each one "should" have a thin cable running to it. Have the person that sitting in the driver's seat activate the heater control levers on the dash, back and forth. One of the two levers, I believe it is lower one, controls how far opened these boxes are. As that person activates the lever on the dash, you should see one or both of the boxes opening and closing at least to some degree. The person installing your heater stuff may have attached to cable in an arbitrary position.

When correctly adjusted, both heater control boxes will be completely closed when the heater lever on the dash is fully to the left. If all is well in the world, when you slide the heater control over completely to the right, and the boxes are correctly adjusted, the heater control boxes will be completely open.

That's a long explanation to say, you slide under your Vanagon with one wrench, adjust a cable, and your heat is correctly adjusted.

Hope this helps,

82 Westfalia recently had leaking muffler and right heater box replaced. Since then there has been a slight improvement in volume and temperature of warm air flowing during the cold weather (though still inadequate).

Since the warm weather has arrived though, the air flow is actually hot, and I can't shut it off! It really comes pouring out at highway speeds.

It's possible that the previous slimy mechanic who did most of the fire damage work, failed to properly re-connect all the air/temperature flow levers to the cables.

As a temporary quick fix (I'm afraid a proper fix=lots of mechanic's time=lots of $), is there any problem with simply blocking off the foot well air vents (scotch/duct tape, stuff an old sock into them, etc.)? Is there any concern with too much heat build up and/or melting of ducts? - Steven Heller Toronto, Canada
