the vw service diagnosis book i have says this about the Digijet (83-85 watercooled) air flow sensor:

connections at air flow sensor (terminal nos.) description specification

6 and 9 potentiometer - total resistance 500-1000 ohms 7 and 9 potentiometer - resistance ohms change as sensorflap is opened measure through wiper arm (flap must move freely) 6 and 22 intake air temperature sensor ohmmeter reading should correspond to graph

shown.

trouble is, i didn't think there were 9 connections at the air flow meter, much less 22 connections. :(
