Excellent! Congratulations. You have just diagnosed the problem. Should have thought of that myself. Fair warning, though -- it will be back. Maybe next week, maybe in five years. The carbon track is worn out where the wiper bears on it. Long term cure is to slightly alter the relationship btw the wiper and the resistor pack (says "Bournes" on it, even Bosch uses American Engineering sometimes) so the wiper bears on a new section of track. That should give you the moral equivalent of a new one, unless the wiper itself is worn out (unlikely). In the meantime you could secure the AFM cover with a TyRap or similar so you can get back in and spray when necessary.
