There was a guy here in Australia about 5 or 6 years ago who was a courier of some sort who used a T3 Transporter for travelling the distances between some of the outback towns in New South Wales. He used to cover around 800km a night on a regular basis, presumably at high speed (well relatively speaking) He had over 600,000kms on his van when he traded it in still with the original motor and all that had gone wrong was a fuel pump (thanks to contaminated fuel) and a burned out highbeam switch (from incorrectly wiring in all his additional spotlights). I'd imagine the motor wasn't long for this world and the resale value wasn't much but it's no myth.He was a customer of the guys I bought my van from,as well as appearing once in one of the Aus.VW magazines Steve O.
