For many years, Toyota Landcruisers have had rear heaters as an option.
(even the old Jeep-like FJ-40 models). As I recall from my old '72, it was
a very simple unit, drum shaped, with a sheet metal cage all around it to
protect it. I had to replace it one time with one from a scrap yard, and I
think it was about $10 (That was c1982 or so).
Aux. heaters are a common accessory for Jeeps and other off-road machines.
I have seen dozens of "universal" units designed to replace or augment the
factory units in old Jeeps, Landcruisers, etc. Most have very simple
connections and have a built-in fan, valve, and switch.
I would check the usual sources for Jeep and RV accessories to find one.
The trick for us would be that you want to be able to direct the heat out
through the vents under the back seat. Most of the universal units I have
seen project heat in a number of directions.
