Jim, I just replaced the whole muffler system on my 82 Vanagon Diesel camper last fall. I ended up doing that because the muffler broke where the pipe entered the muffler, on the manifold side. I found out that the cause of the problem was the 3 rubber mounts that hold the exhaust system to the engine. They had come apart and the vibration caused stress fractures to the pipes and muffler. I ended up ordering the three rubber mounts (2 identical mounts on right and a different one on the left) from VW.... I think if memory serves correct. Got rid of a bunch of vibration noises. I figure, with the expense of the new system; it would be a waste not to do it right- and negate early failure.
