As suggested by others and from my customer's who have done similar swaps, try and locate a good used 1980-1983.5 aircooled gasoline engined Vanagon transaxle. It will go right in and has very similar gearing to the later Wasserboxer trans mentioned above.

Should you not be able to locate one in good shape.......;^)
