Hi Wally,

Read your post on Vanagon.com re thumping over small bumps after replacing your shocks. I had the same problem after mounting KYB shocks all the way around on my 87 Westy. Actually it was loudest on the front axle, of course because it's right under you. My buddy who is a VW mechanic with his own shop, and I tried many solutions. Replaced bearings, upper control arms, etc etc. It didn't help ! The shocks were mounted correctly and were new, so we didn't think to check them. BUT as it turned out it was a simple 2 min. repair. You see, the mounting bolt ontop of the shocks turned out to be a few milimeters longer than the old ones.Have no idea why the bolts are now slightly longer, but they are. Barely visible to the naked eye, but just enough to make a thump when the top of the bolt (sticking out of the top of the shocks) makes mild contact with the body in the top of the wheel well. We simply cut off a few milimeters or so, and PRESTO ! I've been thump free now for 3000 miles. It's wonderful ! Check this, I'll bet this is the problem you are having.

Good luck !
