Subject: Too Much Heat

Mechanic #2 confirms that flaps on heat exchangers were tied in the open position, and cables were missing. He closed them up, so now of course I won't have any heat.

This confirms that previous slimy mechanic's method of following my instructions to "re-connect and insure proper function of all heater controls", was to simply tie the flaps open!

Since mechanic #2 only recently replaced the muffler and right heat exchanger, shouldn't he have seen that then? In any case, he now won't quote on hours required to replace the cables - he doesn't really want (need) the work (he's closes for all of July and never returns messages - must be nice) unless I give him a blank cheque.

To replace the right & left cables, mechanic #3 is quoting 1-1½ hrs., plus another hour if the tubes are gunked up. Dealer is quoting 4 hours, but says there are 3 cables (1 air flap, 1 defroster, 1 heater valve) to replace.

How does this relate to the 4 slider controls on the dash?

Anyone know of a reliable VW mechanic in Toronto who will do a proper job? - Steven Heller Toronto, Canada
