Try removing and reconnecting the connector at the coolant reservoir--there may be a bad connection there. The problem may also be a bad coolant warning unit, this is a relay-like thing under the dash.

You probably don't need to change your coolant for this problem (not unless it's been a couple of years since you last changed it that is). Warning: You can't get this job done properly at one of those Jiffy Quick places, don't let them touch your Vanagon's coolant system!

This light often blinks on my Vanagon, has for years, and my coolant system is in tip top shape. Problem is somewhere in the electronics and I just haven't gotten around to fixing it yet.

Try this trick: Turn the key to the on position and leave it there for 10 seconds before starting the van. When my van has the blinky light problem this always fixes it.
