I have one I bought new from the dealer in 1987.  It has the sticker on
it, and it says 100 lbs tongue weight and 1000 lb load MAX.  These are
very light duty tow bars. I have towed log splitters, concrete mixers,
small boats, a motorcycle trailer and a car dolly with a dead MGB on
it.  The MGB was way over the limit, but it was a short trip at low
speeds on flat ground.  I think I paid about $60 back then.  It is a
handy device, but don't over load it--the Vanagon brakes are barely
adequate for the Vanagon alone!
