Gregor, if only the auto section is gone, any rabbit/golf/jetta box is sort of interchangeable. Late Jetta2 or Golf2 are in fact identical minus the cooler if it has one, some Audi are often identical period. It requires a good solid days work, 2 paper final to tranny seal, one such O-ring, and the torque converter seal for common sense and basically involves switching the selector lever and throttle linkages (requires unbolting the valve body) and swapping the outer most sun gear (slips on and off) It is a straightforward conversion but rejoining the final and auto can be a major PITA. The benefit is that one can often find a solid Golf box for $150 or so. I've had one in the '90 for 15k miles including some "torture testing" and it runs/shifts/performs flawlessly.
