Subject: Epidermal Layer of Sliding Door
Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII
Good Morning Vannites,
Many years ago in the my 1987 Syncro Westy's life, the unobservant owner
did not observe a small metal post. The relatively minor damage imparted
to the center sheetmetal of the sliding door so distressed the owner, that
he promptly delivered the damaged Vanagon to a known trustworthy body
shop. The very body repair facility which had recently proven their
trustworthiness with the completion of a concours-winning 914 also in
possession of the unobservant owner. The owner says "this door shall again
be made beautiful such that no one could know of the desecration imparted
upon it". The beautification services were rendered and the owner's
wallet made lighter.
Many openings and closings of the door later (three of four years worth),
the flexing of the sheetmetal caused the thin layer of body filler to
crack admitting a great evil to all things metal, moisture. A few cycles
of Colorado freeze and thaw, and the crack went forth and multiplied
admitting additional moisture. The twice distressed owner went forth
again to the body shop where the beautification services were again
rendered, and the owner's wallet made lighter.
Many openings and closings of the door later (another three of four years
worth), the flexing of the sheetmetal caused the thin layer of body filler
to crack admitting a great evil to all things metal, moisture. A few
cycles of Colorado freeze and thaw, and the crack went forth and
multiplied admitting additional moisture. The thrice distressed would
like to get this fixed, once and for all as many more openings and
closings of the door are desired (and it's really ugly).
Some fine poster or lurker to this list has surely encountered this
unwanted and unsightly chain of events. Might that fine poster or lurker
have a repair that remains beautiful even after many openings and closings
of the sliding door? Might that fine poster or lurker impart that
knowledge such that the thrice distressed owner not become a
quadradically distressed owner?
In the event that the most effective remedy is to replacement, is it
possible to replace the epidermal layer alone, or must one replace the
entire door? If replacement of the entire door is required, for what
years of Vanagon are these doors interchangable? Does any fine poster or
lurker in this list, residing within a reasonable distance of Boulder,
Colorado, have an excellent specimen they would like to exchange for
United States currency?
Regards to all,
Jon B Kanas
