Clinton Apologizes For Bombing Mistake
In an early morning news conference, President Clinton expressed "deep
regret" and "grave concern" today for NATO inaccuracy overnight in action
over downtown Belgrade.
"My advisors have poured over the data and bomb-sight videos overnight, and
I deeply regret that a mistake on our part has sent two of our missiles off
course, causing needless damage," the President said. "A regrettable
mistake of this nature, is however, not unlikely in a wartime situation. We
wish to express our deep condolences, and express our grave concern that
this type of mistake be avoided in the future."
The two missiles were programmed off-course, slamming into the wrong
downtown building, destroying a nearby 1989 Volkswagen Vanagon. The blue
7-passenger van, apparently parked street side, was struck by blast
concussion and debris, causing extensive body damage and flattening of
three of the tires. The dash cluster was also knocked loose, and hung by
the speedometer cable.
"This atrocity will not be tolerated," reported Yugoslav Foreign Minister
Kzylrkav Grlzastrivkovic. "We are a peaceable people, and this Vanagon
bombing only serves to harm our innocent countrymen, who would never do
anything so horrible as this. This vehicular genocide is a war crime, and a
violation of the Geneva Convention. Did I say that we are a peaceable
people? Well, we are."
A nearby building, the Chinese embassy was also damaged in the blast, 3 are
known dead. The cost of damage to the Vanagon was not immediately known,
though it appeared to be a total loss.
The owner of the Vanagon, Yugoslav warlord, Ettenik Killenzar, said "the
head gaskets were beginning to weep, and I had the wrong tires on it..."
but refused further comment.
