Hmmm...are you sure it's busted? I have an '84 with electrodes in the side of the tank, so I haven't seen your setup -- but on mine the yellow light means everything except "almost full" and "almost empty." Says so right in the book, and that's how it works, too. Green means (roughly) > 11 gals, Yellow > 2 gals, Red > 1/2 gal, No light < 1/2 gal. If yours is like that, I bet it's just fine.
