No I was told there was another way to bring in a "collectible" car but it could never be registered. They used the example of trailering it around from show to show.

Also mentioned... If a normal gray market vehicle was not converted within the allotted time (1 month or year, don't remember), then it would have to be exported or "destroyed". Funny, I don't think they would me destroy my own car. :-) I'd hand them the title and the VIN tag and head straight to the junkyard for another set!

What really bothers me: 15 years ago with a little grease in the palm, certain inspectors in shall we say "Jersey" could overlook certain vehicles. I was in PA a couple of years ago and nearly ran off the road when I saw a BMW M1 sitting in front of a shop. I talked to the shop owner for a few minutes. It had Jersey tags and NOT a thing converted. Pure German spec. (M1's never sold in the US. Maybe only 500(?) of them made in the early 80s)

All of these import restrictions apply to vehicles that are to be registered, right? If you wanted to import a vehicle that was for off-road use only and was never to be registered, would all these "crash test" restrictions apply?
