The other reason for the salvage title is to make it harder for thieves to
switch VIN numbers from a totaled one to a stolen one. This used to be a
common way to "launder" stolen cars. Rings used to operate with junk yards
and buy expensive wrecked cars on the cheap and switch the VIN to a good
condition stolen one. The insurance companies want totaled cars to have
Salvage titles so that this technique is more difficult. It cuts down on
their loses in the long run. We should expect to see the Salvage title
process go nationwide.
