In January 1991 I had what was called a new engine installed by the local VW dealer for a net $3176. Would have been higher but VWOA kicked in for the 2 cylinder heads ($678) under warranty, due to the known head problem. Looking back I have no way of knowing whether it was a rebuilt or not. Whatever the case I haven't had a single problem with the engine although, to put things in perspective, the engine only has 40,000 miles on it.
