Toyota's are EASY to work on compared to vw's. They really are very well designed cars. Every part is just good enough, no better, no worse, although their engines and automatic transmissions are uncommonly well built, even compared to the rest of the car.

On a vw, you'll see quality of design and construction all over the map, from incredibly excellent, to awfully bad.

Also, mechanics like to do lots of routine maintenence, and they'll get more of that with Toyota/Lexus. All in all, your mechanic made an excellent business decision.
