The only Suburu engine that is commonly available and installs relatively easily is the 4 cylinder. It is a good, reliable engine, but you lose 4 inches of ground clearance, unless you risk modifying the oil pan and reducing the oil capacity, then you still lose 2 inches. And the wiring is a major job. I am having a 5 cylinder installed by Detlev at the Vanagon Projekt because the engines are cheap and easy to get, and they are powerful and dependable with a broad torque range. There is no loss of ground clearance, and I can keep the skid plate on my Syncro. And when you lift the engine hatch you will have that warm fuzzy feeling with the VW emblem right on top of the valve cover. :) Zoe Ann & Roger 1987 4x5 Adventurewagen
