Well I finally took both rear wheel assemblies apart and put new bearings
in. The inner right rear bearing had turned in the casing. I glued the new
bearings in with heavy duty loctite and hope that they will stay in place.
At the same time I replaced the CV joints and the brakes (cylinders and
shoes, drums were still okay). The nice thing about taking the whole
assembly apart is that you can bolt the outer side of the driveshaft onto
the wheel assembly before installation and do not have to find bolts
through the narrow tunnel of the trailing arm. 

It was good to have Martin Jagersand's description of the CV assembly as a
primer on his website. I have done it before but one tends to forget some
of the details.

Using all my spare time during the last two days and about Can$600 I
finally got a very smooth rear end in my Syncro again.
