Without knowing how many miles are on the trans I'd say this is fairly "normal". I have a fresh rebuilt in Vinnie (also an 85 GL but a Westy) and there was a grind present between my 1st and 2nd. One thing that dramatically improved the shift quality was changing the gear oil to synthetic. Made a huge difference. My mechanic suggested breaking in a new trans with dino and then transitioning to synthetic citing that he felt this was better for the synchros during the break in period. So, change to synthetic and drive it until it drops out! Then put in a rebuilt for around $800+labor.
