I also looked at the Subaru, but shied away because of the loss of ground clearance. I am having a 5 cylinder Audi/VW installed in my Syncro by the Vanagon Projekt in Livermore, California. There is no loss of ground clearance, and I can keep the skid plate. I like the extra low end torque of the 5 cylinder compared to the Subaru engine also. The engine hatch is modified to have a portion very slightly raised, such that usage is not changed. Westies can still use their bed. The donor cars are also cheaper than the Subaru, and plentiful.
