Rose, we live in a remote area of Ontario, Canada and we drive a '86 Syncro Westfalia. We have had no syncro-specific problems that we couldn't work out with the help of the Vanagon List Members and the Bentley Manual. Finding mechanics which are familiar with the Syncro Vanagon is difficult but in our area finding mechanics familiar with 2wd Vanagons is also difficult. If you find a good Syncro, don't turn it down. With the List's help you can have whatever parts you want within a day or two. In my experience, it is just not true that you have to wait "a minimum of 10 days to get parts".
