i use a circular cutoff saw to cut the base off at the welds - and when your reinstall you just re weld where the cuts were made. you can make a very clean cut with a cutting wheel, without any damage, and its very easy to remove the bases.

like my grandfather always used to say... "Use the right tool for the job, and its less work"
