Mark,

I've removed and replaced mine from above. If you want to replace the nylon connections between the lever and the linkage, you need to gain access from below, but I believe Matthew is speaking of the ball/reverse lokout arrangement which is the fulcrum for the shift lever and is located within the steel cup bolted onto the floor. The bottom end of this is fairly fragile, and mine has been broken by "mechanics" who can't figure out how to get a Vanagon into reverse three times now.
