Subject: Alternative to deck lid raising
Comments: To: David Marshall <vanagon@VOLKSWAGEN.ORG>

Here is an alternative to raising the deck height on the Van...

Remove the motor compartment cover, (must use a metal cover for this idea). Cut a hole in the cover to the shape and size of the up-raised offenders on the motor +10% for motor wiggle. Shape a piece of sheet metal into an inverted "bowl" to fit the opening and cover the motor. Weld this bowl in place on the motorbox cover, creating an aneurysm to contain the high spots, but eliminating the need to raise the entire deck.

This was Mitsubishi's answer to the bulging (dual) cam cover on the Eclipse (Eagle Talon, etc.)

Has anyone installing an I-4/I-5 motor in their Van investigated this idea? Is there something I am not thinking of that prevents this from being a solution?

<<<SNIP>>> The 15 degree angle approach, like I am doing at Fast Forward ( http://www.fastforward.ca ) does have it's limitations too. You must raise the engine lid about 5 to 7 cm or lower the engine 5 to 7 cm (which BTW, do not loose 5 to 7 cm of ground clearance as compaired to the original boxer engine). <<<SNIP>>> >
