May I recommend the following, too;

     - Check the condition of the injector seals as they can perish and
       leak fuel. Check too that the fuel lines aren't "squirty". Mine
       were on my '81 van - we nearly passed out with the fumes!

     - Check that all the tin plate is in place. The PO, in their
       wisdom, may have removed some of it which will shorten the
       engine's life.

     - If it's high mileage, assume a new set of recon injectors. My
       MPG shot from 8 to 16 with a new set of injectors on my 120K
       air-cooled.

     - Make sure the EGR box (if you have one) isn't rotten through.

     - Check the wiring isn't fried with the heat, esp. around the
       distributor sensor. Ours was and caused erratic behaviour. There's
       also a number of ground posts on the engine & loose wires here
       can cause weird problems.
