Subject: My new Starter's dimentions
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII

I sent this to the Syncro list whilst Gerry was out...

I received my new (rebuilt) starter from the Bus Depot. They only listed one starter for both 2x and 4x4, so I took the chance. This is a Bosch (with a lifetime replacement warranty). If you have been following any of my earlier posts on the Vanagon list (down today) the syncro starter is apparently shorter. Eric (EMZ) indicated the winding case needs to be 2.5 inch not 2.75 inch to fit behind the diff lock servo. The dimensions of the starter on my '91 are as follows: Winding case (black part) = 2.75 inches. Total length from mounting face to end (not including the "nipple" bump in center of end) = 5.75 inch . The dimensions of the New Starter Winding Case = 2.25 inch Total length = 5.25 inch Other than that the starter looks identical to my old one. Thats right, the new starter is a half inch shorter. Now, my diff lock works fine and clears the old (bigger) starter by a half inch at least. As I said this starter is the dimension which Eric indicated would not fit on his syncro transaxle. Is it possible that the placement or dimensions of the newer transaxles is different then the earlier ones? This new starter will fit with out a problem as far as length is concerned. N-Y-K-W-I- Know. If any one has any info to add or questions let me know. Nat Seattle 91 syncro westy.
