This test needs to be done on a non-wheeled dolly. Also, If you are not experiencing any nasty symptoms, why go through the trouble of looking for trouble. I was down at my PO mechanic getting some springtime work done on my 91 syncro westy and 'for fun' I asked him to jack up the rear wheels on a wheeled dolly and try and drive off. The idle was at about 850ish rpms with a warm engine. At idle, in granny gear, as the clutch was let out (slightly) the van crept forward. same in reverse - crept backwards. I assume that this is NOT good news. We also tried to take out the front drive shaft, but the bolts were seized in. Rather than cut off the bolts, I decided to just leave it in. The front tires do NOT scrub or bind when I turn a tight corner. Malcolm S, Halifax |
