The block has a spot to do it above the pan but it is very close to the oil output of the turbo and I want there to be some vertical drop. Has anyone drilled out the aluminum pan from the Vanagon? Where did you put the hole? Does this lead the pan cracking around the hole? Well, as I suggested in the original posting (below) for best flow it is a good idea to put the outlet of the oil return above the oil level in the pan. With the tilted installation in the Vanagon that means putting the return on the block. With the newer style manifolds (from transverse engine installations) this is not a problem. (As seen in the pics I posted) I gather you probably use the longitudinal style manifolds. Only one I know of who used those is Karl M. You could ask him what he did with the oil return. I looked at 1/2" line for the return line.... looks awful big!
