Hi Bill:
Yes it is possible to pull only the tranny. I have done it alone and it's
easy. The only bear was getting the input shaft lined up into the clutch plates
so the trans could fit flush against the engine. I will be doing mine again in
two weeks to replace: clutch, TO bearing, bearing yoke and bushings, pilot
bearing, and surface the flywheel.
One thing that is not mentioned on this list is that you need to GREASE THE
SPLINES on the input shaft. This allows the friction disc to float and work
properly. If not done, the clutch will drag and cause lousiness in the
shifting, especially first to second. Clean the splines and remove all rust,
crud and what-have-you, then place a SMALL amount of grease on the splines of
the input shaft ONLY. When you assemble it, any excess will be squeegeed off
away from the flywheel, thus avoiding grease on the business surface. This
trick was found on the BMW M/C Airheads list.
Good luck,
Randy Bergum
