I have an inverter which I use to power a vcr on long trips (the TV has a 12V adaptor built in) - main drawback is that mine has an annoying buzz while it's running - don't know if they all do. It's still handy to have though as you can use it for any kind of 110 V appliance. I have a country homes camper conversion, and it uses a 2nd battery to power the fridge (only 2 way, no propane) and a battery isolator wired into the charging circuit so you can't drain the main battery with the fridge; I wired the inverter up to the 2nd battery so it's similarly isolated.
