Definitely drop the tranny with the engine still in the car. Much easier. You can support the engine with another jack or span the opening of the engine compartment with a 2x4 and hang the engine with a chain or rope.

I'll be installing a clutch in my Vanagon in the next month or so, and I will add a tech article with pictures to my website at:
