Frank-

Before you spend your Saturday futzing with re-manufacturing your speedometer cable and hub dust cap, why don't you check with a vendor or VW dealer for replacement prices. If the two parts run more than $35 I would be very surprised.

Isn't time with your family worth $35?

Without actually looking at it, my thought is to braze it and add some extra metal, then file it square again. If that would heat the cable sheath too much, then make the hole in the cap considerable larger, make an insert to fit the hole and epoxy it onto the cable end. Epoxy would be too soft to use simply to square up the cable again, but adding a little width and giving it a metal skin should do nicely.
