Both my wife and I have 4 and 1 year olds ourselves. We sleep in the top and our oldest gets that whole big lower bed to himself. Our youngest sleeps in a portable playpen that we set up for him at night and fits in the area in front of the fridge. The other idea I had was attaching a rail to the leading edge of the top bunk. I thought about attaching some clips to it and have it so the rail could slide in and out of those clips. But if the lil' buggers want out they are going to get out no matter what. So, we decided to put them on the floor.
