No kids, but here is a solution that works for us (keeping pillows from falling into the abyss).

Make a board of the same thickness as that which the bed is made of. Cut it to the full width of the bed, and of the dimension that will fill the space between the head of the bed (edge) and the vertical top support bracket. Pad the board, and upholster with a nice cloth.

Stores nicely at the foot of the bed while in transit. Flips into position in a moment and prevents falling accidents; pillow, or progeny.

How does the rest of the world stop their kids (4 and 1 year olds) from falling out of their 'upstairs' bunk in a camper van. The bed is made up from a fixed rear section with a separate section that pulls foreword and drops into place leaving a drop at the front edge of about 6 foot to the floor. OUCH! Any tried and trusted ideas most welcome.
