Subject: Rear axle stub shaft/bearing question
Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII

I had to remove the right hand rear drive shaft from my Vanagon due to 3 cv bolts shearing off, and needed to make sure that the flange was not damaged (nothing that a bit of time with a file will fix).

My question is, do I need to dismantle the axle and bearing to replace the spacer between the bearings, or can I just put a new grease seal in, reinstall the hub, and torgue to spec?

Some cars that I have worked on in the past require replacing the spacer, since it is "crushed" when the axle nut is torgued down, and can not be reused, I am not sure if this applies to the Vanagon's or not.

TIA, Howard Fleming hfleming@moosebird.com
