Not too "rare". In 1986 and 1987 VW made "basic" (non GL) Camper models in both 2WD and Syncro form. These were like the complete GL Camper models, but lacked the "camping" equipment. You can read a description of this and other Vanagons in the "Info" section of VANAGON.COM.
