Yes, it is (unfortunately) wider at the end that connects to the head. You can buy a replacement from VW or go to your flaps and check through their "Gates" (or other brand) aftermarket hose catalog to make something up yourself. In terms of length I've seen two versions. In one case the rear hose goes from the head to just behind the fuel tank where it connects to an identical "front" hose. In the other case it goes all the way to the heater core.
