The last time this happened to me the internal head sealing gaskets were gone, and combustion gasses were getting into the coolant and ended up in the reservoir. If this keeps happening after four or five drives, have it checked out by a good mechanic! Also, A/C repair will be expensive due to the cost of Freon now, and any 14" wheel cover will fit the Vanagon.
