I used a tach from a 84 golf in my 82 westy (1800 8V) . I had to do some plastic trimming and fiddling, but was able to use the golf's gas gauge and the vanagon's temp gauge in the tach. It really helped having the circuit diagrams from the Golf Bentley manual. It also is very handy to have some spare instrument cluster bits and pieces, including the "foil" circuit board.
