My favorite fix is the installation of a 14X1.25mm spark plug hole repair insert (available as a kit from better parts stores. Sav-A-Thread is one brand, and I think Heli-coil makes one - although you want the solid type, not the spring one). Follow the instructions in the insert literature, then simply use a 14x1.25 drain plug with suitable washer, also available from the sam parts store. I have installed probably a dozen and a half of these, and have not had a single problem with them. The bonus is that you now have a steel thread to screw the steel drain plug into - something of an improvement over the original idea, what?
