Yes, they did. The earlier transaxles were a nosecone sideshift design vs. the later transaxle maincase sideshift.

There is about a $350+ price difference between a 091 and a 091-1 rebuild from me but I don't think that its worth all this extra work to attempt to 'save' that amount. How many extra hours are going to be required? How much for either a used 091 shift linkage or adapter kit? How much less is the Van now worth due to its being a hermaphrodite?

Hey, its someone else's Vanagon and money. Its easy for me to armchair this job from afar but its not something that I would do to one of my vehicles.

Now if we were discussing dropping the boat anchor Wasserboxer and installing one of Detlev's or Ken's Audi 5 cylinder kits then thats a different story! ;^)
